Packing cubes keep a carry-on organized and make it easier to pull out one outfit at a time. They differ mainly in weight, capacity and whether they compress. The Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate set is the lightest, the Isolate Compression set squeezes the most out of soft clothes, and the Peak Design Packing Cube holds the most per cube.

The picks

01

★Lightest set

Eagle CreekPack-It Isolate Cube Set XS/S/M

Best for: The lightest cubes for carry-ons

Three translucent cubes (1 L, 3 L and 7 L) in water-resistant recycled 70D nylon, 4.3 oz for the set.

What we like

  • Very light
  • Translucent so you can see contents
  • Three sizes

Watch out for

  • No compression
  • Thin fabric

Eagle Creek’s XS/S/M set has three cubes of 1 L, 3 L and 7 L. The whole set weighs 4.3 oz (122 g), or 17 g, 28 g and 43 g per cube. They measure 19 x 11 x 6 cm, 25 x 18 x 8 cm and 36 x 25 x 8 cm. The fabric is water-resistant 70D nylon made from ocean-recycled material, and it is translucent so you can see what is in each cube. These cubes do not compress.

02

★Best compression

Eagle CreekPack-It Isolate Compression Cube Set S/M

Best for: Squeezing bulky clothes

Two compression cubes: the S holds 3 L (1 L compressed) and the M 7 L (2 L compressed), 4.8 oz for the set.

What we like

  • Compresses
  • Light

Watch out for

  • Only two cubes
  • Compressed cubes still weigh the same

This two-cube set adds a compression zipper. Eagle Creek lists the S at 3 L expanded and 1 L compressed, and the M at 7 L expanded and 2 L compressed. The pair weighs 4.8 oz (136 g). Compression helps most with bulky soft items like sweaters. With only two cubes, you may want to pair it with the non-compression set.

03

★Most capacity

Peak DesignPacking Cube (Small / Medium)

Best for: Structured cubes that expand

A two-size cube that zips from compressed to expanded: Small 4.5 to 9 L at 110 g, Medium 8 to 18 L at 144 g.

What we like

  • Largest capacity
  • Expands and compresses

Watch out for

  • Heaviest per cube
  • Sold one at a time

Peak Design’s cube zips between two depths. The Small runs from 4.5 L compressed to 9 L expanded at 32 x 17 x 8 to 17 cm, and weighs 110 g. The Medium runs from 8 L to 18 L at 32 x 32 x 8 to 17 cm, and weighs 144 g. That makes it the highest-capacity option here, but each cube weighs more than Eagle Creek’s whole three-cube set.

How to choose

  • Measure your bag. Cube sizes should fit the inside of your suitcase. See our carry-on luggage picks.
  • Decide on compression. It helps with bulky clothes but adds zippers and a bit of weight.
  • Keep liquids separate. Cubes do not replace the quart bag. See the TSA liquids rule.
  • Leave batteries accessible. Spare batteries go in your carry-on. See power bank rules for flying.

Frequently asked questions

Do packing cubes save weight?

No. Cubes add a little weight. The Eagle Creek Isolate set is the lightest here at 4.3 oz for three cubes.

Do compression cubes let me pack more?

They shrink the volume of soft clothes. Eagle Creek says its S compression cube goes from 3 L to 1 L and its M from 7 L to 2 L. Your bag still has to meet airline size and weight limits.

Are the Peak Design cubes sold as a set?

Peak Design sells its Packing Cube in Small and Medium sizes. Check the maker page for current bundles.

Can I see what is inside?

The Eagle Creek Isolate cubes are translucent, so you can see the contents without opening them.
